here is a great article about the phenominon known as “The Uncanny Valley”

Source

Why realistic graphics make humans look creepy.

By Clive Thompson

In 1978, the Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori noticed : The more humanlike his robots became, the more people were attracted to them, but only up to a point. If an android become too realistic and lifelike, suddenly people were repelled and disgusted. The problem, Mori realized, is in the nature of how we identify with robots. When an android, such as R2-D2 or C-3PO, barely looks human, we cut it a lot of slack. It seems cute. We don’t care that it’s only 50 percent humanlike. But when a robot becomes 99 percent lifelike—so close that it’s almost real—we focus on the missing 1 percent. We notice the slightly slack skin, the absence of a truly human glitter in the eyes. The once-cute robot now looks like an animated corpse. Our warm feelings, which had been rising the more vivid the robot became, abruptly plunge downward. Mori called this plunge “the Uncanny Valley,” the paradoxical point at which a simulation of life becomes so good it’s bad.

As video games have developed increasingly realistic graphics, they have begun to suffer more and more from this same conundrum. Games have unexpectedly fallen into the Uncanny Valley.

Consider Alias, the new title based on the TV show. It’s a reasonably fun action-and-puzzle game, where you maneuver Sydney Bristow through a series of spy missions. But whenever the camera zooms in on her face, you’re staring at a Jennifer Garner death mask. I nearly shrieked out loud at one point. And whenever other characters speak to you—particularly during cut-scenes, those supposedly “cinematic” narrative moments—they’re even more ghastly. Mouths and eyes don’t move in synch. It’s as if all the characters have been shot up with some ungodly amount of Botox and are no longer able to make Earthlike expressions.

Every highly realistic game has the same problem. Resident Evil Outbreak’s humans are realistic, but their facial expressions are so deadeningly weird they’re almost scarier than the actual zombies you’re fighting. The designers of 007: Everything or Nothing managed to take the adorable Shannon Elizabeth and render her as a walleyed replicant.

The Uncanny Valley can make games less engrossing. That’s particularly true with narrative games, which rely on believable characters with whom you’re supposed to identify. The whole point is to suspend disbelief and immerse yourself. But that’s hard to do when the characters create goosebumps. You fight searing battles, solve brain-crushing puzzles, vanquish enemies, and what are you rewarded with? A chance to watch your avatar mince about the screen in some ghoulish parody of humanity.

The screwiest part of this phenomenon is that game designers pride themselves on the quality of their sepulchral human characters. It’s part of the malaise that currently affects game design, in which too many designers assume that crisper 3-D graphics will make a game better. That may be true when it comes to scenery, explosions, or fog. But with human faces and bodies, we’re harder to fool. Neuroscientists argue that our brains have evolved specific mechanisms for face recognition, because being able to recognize something “wrong” in someone else’s face has long been crucial to survival. If that’s true, then game designers may never be able to capture that last 1 percent of realism. The more they plug away at it—the more high-resolution their human characters become—the deeper they’ll trudge into the Uncanny Valley.

Instead, maybe they should try climbing out, by going in the opposite direction and embracing low-rez simplicity. Roboticists have begun doing this. Like Mori, they’ve learned that a spare, stripped-down robot can seem more lifelike than an explicitly humanoid one. I own a Roomba, one of those Frisbee-shaped vacuum robots, and it doesn’t look even vaguely human. Yet as it zips around my living room, it seems amazingly alive, and I can’t help but feel warmly toward it. This is because of another quirk of our psychology: If something behaves in only a slightly human way, we’ll fill in the blanks—we’ll read humanness into it. (That’s partly why our pets seem so intelligent and humanlike.)

Comic-strip artists have known this for years. As comic-book theorist Scott McCloud points out, we identify more deeply with simply drawn cartoon characters, like those in Peanuts, than with more realistic ones. Charlie Brown doesn’t trigger our obsession with the missing details the way a not-quite-photorealistic character does, so we project ourselves onto him more easily. That’s part of the genius behind modernist artists such as Picasso or Matisse. They realized that the best way to capture the essence of a person or object was with a single, broad-stroked detail.

Some of the best game designers understand this, too. Jet Grind Radio, the old Fear Effect series, and the more recent Viewtiful Joe all use the chunky style of cel-shaded animation to create characters who are cartoonish yet vividly alive. Lara Croft is another good example. Even as her games became more graphically precise, the designers left Croft as a very stylized figure, the better to have players identify with her. And the only game designer who has produced a 20-year string of popular characters is Shigeru Miyamoto, the architect of Nintendo’s Disneylike visual style.

Unfortunately, though, gaming’s Uncanny Valley could be here to stay, simply because players have become used to it. In the real world of plastic surgery, face-lifts used to look horrifically strange but now go unnoticed. Likewise, we’ve played with dead, fish-eyed characters for so long that they seem kinda normal. Creepiness, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

She celebrates with her family, and then goes to check on her little brother who is playing around the old well on the temple grounds where they live. Sota, Kagome’s little brother is afraid that Buyo the family cat has fallen down the well. Kagome bravely ventures inside the darkened shed where the well has been for centuries.

Suddenly arms emerge from the dark well and Kagome is dragged down into it. She finds herself face to face with a giant centipede woman who keeps mentioning a jewel. Kagome shoves her away causing her one of her arms to tear off in the process, much to Kagome’s bewilderment. When she exits the well she finds that she is standing in a forest. Soon she notices a strange boy pinned to a tree with an arrow through his chest. Eventually Kagome makes her way to a nearby village where she meets an old woman named Kaede.

Everyone in the village, including Kaede is shocked by how much Kagome resembles her deceased sister Kikyo. Kagome discovers that she has travelled through time to feudal Japan and that the boy she saw pinned to the tree is Inuyasha, a half demon that was once in love with Kikyo, but Inuyasha betrayed her, and tried to steal the Shikon Jewel, a mystical jewel that grants demons immense powers.Inuyasha had killed Kikyo and the Shikon Jewel was cremated with her body. Eventually Mistress Centipede comes looking for Kagome again and manages to seperate her from the rest of the villagers who are trying to protect her. Mistress Centipede tears at Kagome’s side and amazingly the Shikon Jewel pops out. Mistress Centipede swallows the Jewel and begins to transform. Kagome’s only choice is to free Inuyasha in hopes he will save her.Inuyasha makes short work of Mistress Centipede, but soon other demons begin to arrive in the small feudal village, with plans to take the Shikon Jewel for themselves. When a crow demon steals the jewel, Kagome fires an arrow at it, causing the jewel to shatter into dozens of small shards which are flung across Japan. Together, Inuyasha and Kagome begin their quest to retrieve the lost Shikon shards and reassemble the jewel once more.

What is “motion capture” you might ask? well, it is basically taking Digitally recorded movements and using that information to Create animated character models. in film-making this is referred to as “performance Capture.” If you have seen the new movie “Beowulf” or “The Polar Express” these movies make use of the technology that is performance capture.

A more technical explanation can be found HERE

It appears to me that this technology is either loved or hated…

While there are obviously many benefits of using this technique, (virtual reality, editing abilities, the possibilities are endless) I personally don’t think the technology is quite there yet. Watching the previously mentioned films, the animated actors just don’t appear realistic enough. their eyes are too vacant and just dont look “real.” When rendered objects in which become very close to looking real, the human eye becomes more discerning and things “appear” to be even more fake than less-real animation. I will do some research on that and blog on it some time in the future.

Anyways, While I think this technology is great and will be amazing in the future, we will have to wait for hardware and processing power to catch up before it truely becomes “lifelike.”

Past methods of animation:

Leonardo shoulder study (ca. 1510)

Seven drawings extending over two folios in the Windsor Collection, Anatomical Studies of the Muscles of the Neck, Shoulder, Chest, and Arm, show detailed drawings of the upper body (with a less-detailed facial image), illustrating the changes as the torso turns from profile to frontal position and the forearm extends.

The Magic Lantern (1671)

The Magic Lantern was classed as the inventor of the modern day projector. It consisted of a translucent oil painting and a simple lamp. When put together in a darkened room, the image would appear larger on a flat surface. Euthanasia’s Kirchner spoke about this originating from China in the 1600’s.

Thaumatrope (1824)

A Thaumatrope was a toy used in the Victorian era. It was a disk or card with two different pictures on each side that was attached to two pieces of string. When the strings were twirled quickly between the fingers the two pictures appear to combine into a single image. The creator of this invention may have been either John Ayrton Paris or Charles Babbage.

Zoetrope (1832)

A Zoetrope is a device which creates the image of a moving picture. This contraption was produced in 1834 by George Horner. The device is basically a cylinder with vertical slits around the sides. Around the inside edge of the cylinder there are a series of pictures on the opposite side to the slits. As the cylinder is spun, the user then looks through the slits producing the illusion of motion.

Praxinoscope (1877)

The Praxinoscope, invented by French scientist Charles-Émile Reynaud, was a more sophisticated version of the zoetrope. It used the same basic mechanism of a strip of images placed on the inside of a spinning cylinder, but instead of viewing it through slits, it was viewed in a series of stationary mirrors around the inside of the cylinder, so that the animation would stay in place, and also provided a clearer image. Reynaud also developed a larger version of the praxinoscope that could be projected onto a screen, called the Théâtre Optique.

Flip book (1868)

The first flip book was patented in 1868 by a John Barnes Linnet. This was another step closer to the development of animation. Like the Zoetrope, the Flip Book creates the illusion of motion. A set of sequential pictures seen at a high speed creates this effect. The Mutoscope (1894) is essentially a flip book in a box with a crank handle to flip the pages.

Present methods of animation:

Stop Motion

Stop Motion is used for many animation productions using physical objects rather than images, as with traditional animation. An object will be photographed, moved slightly, and then photographed again. When the pictures are played back in normal speed the object will appear to move by itself. This process is used for many productions, for example, clay animations such as Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit, as well as animated movies which use poseable figures, such as The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. Sometimes even objects are used, such as with the films of Jan Svankmajer.

Stop motion animation was also commonly used for special effects work in many live-action films, such as The 1933 version of King Kong and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad.

CGI Animation

Computer-generated imagery changed animated films forever. The first fully computer generated feature film created was Toy Story, produced by Pixar Animation Studios in 1995. Toy Story proved that companies were slowly making the transition from traditional animation to CGI animation. The process of CGI animation is still very tedious and similar in that sense to traditional animation, and it still adheres to many of the same principles.

A principal difference of CGI Animation compared to traditional animation is that drawing is replaced by 3D modeling, though a form of animation that combines the two worlds can be considered to be computer aided animation but on 2D computer drawing (which can be considered close to traditional drawing and sometimes based on it).

Future methods of animation:

here is where I will probably do most of my research, on the cutting edge of technology… after all that is what is most interesting to me!

Animated Humans

Most CGI created films are based on animal characters, monsters, machines or cartoon-like humans. Animation studios are now trying to develop ways of creating realistic-looking humans. A couple films that attempted this were Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within in 2001, and Beowulf in 2007. However, due to the complexity of the human body functions, emotions and interactions, this method of animation is rarely used. Of principal complexity is the creation of a convincing human face model. Of secondary complexity but still a modern approach are techniques for the production of convincing hair or cloth movement. Later this form was tried again by scanning humans into computers such as the movie Beowulf in 2007.

I will update this with any info I can find in the future, stay tuned!

Naruto (NARUTO – ナルト -, Naruto) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto with an anime adaptation. The main character, Naruto Uzumaki, is a loud, hyperactive, unpredictable adolescent ninja who constantly searches for recognition and aspires to become a Hokage, the ninja in the village acknowledged as the leader and the strongest of all.

On September 10, 2005, Naruto had its hour-long premiere in the U.S. on Cartoon Network’s Toonami. The first episode of Naruto premiered in Canada on YTV on September 16, 2005. In the United Kingdom, Naruto premiered on Jetix on July 22, 2006. In Australia and New Zealand it premiered on Cartoon Network on September 27, 2006. It also began showing on Toasted TV on January 12, 2007, in Australia.

In the US, Naruto maintains a TV-PG rating in every episode. Most usually are rated TV-PG-V for episodes with mild blood/violence, while others (usually associated with Jiraya) are rated TV-PG-D or S.References to alcohol, Japanese cultural differences, mild language, mild sexual situations (which can only be seen in the Naruto: Uncut Box Sets), and even blood and death remain in the English version, though reduced in some instances. Other networks make additional content edits apart from the edits done by Cartoon Network, such as Jetix’s more strict censoring of blood, language, smoking and the like. So far, only one episode, the “lost OVA”, has received a TV-Y7-FV rating, but this was likely due to Cartoon Network neglecting to update the rating because in the timeslot that this special ran in, TV-Y7-FV programs were typically run. Repeated viewings (such as the on August 8, 2007) have listed the special as TV-PG-V, as did all commercials for the special.

Since Naruto is pretty much my favorite Anime (at the moment) I will be putting links to videos up on my website as my first priority (as far as organized anime goes!)

so, check it out! you can watch free videos of Naruto in order of episodes at my site: Cartoonfanz.com! Enjoy!

One Piece (ワンピース, Wan Pīsu) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda with an anime adaptation. The series focuses on a ragtag crew of heroic pirates called the Straw Hat Pirates, formed and led by a captain named Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy’s greatest ambition is to obtain the world’s ultimate treasure, One Piece, and become the Pirate King.

English adaptations

Odex English version

In Singapore, the anime is licensed by Odex, which produces its English dub. It contains fewer edits to names and animation with most if not all reference to blood, violence and death being left unedited. However, Luffy and Sanji’s names are pronounced incorrectly; Luffy’s is pronounced similarly to the word “fluffy” (which sounds like “La-fee” as opposed to “Loof-y”), and Sanji’s name is pronounced with the “an” sounding similar to how it would be used in the word “sand” (“San-gee” as opposed to “Sahn-ji”).

4Kids English version

The anime was adapted by 4Kids Entertainment and previously shown on Cartoon Network’s Toonami, and “reruns” are airing on their online broadband service Toonami Jetstream in the United States and on networks in many other English-speaking countries around the world. The 4Kids version debuted in the US on the Fox network as part of the Fox Box block (now called 4Kids TV) on September 18, 2004. This version of the show varied considerably from the original Japanese series. In an attempt to appeal to their target audience, 4Kids edited the series considerably to make it more appropriate for children’s television. 4Kids announced in December 2006 that they had cancelled production of their dub.

As of September 2006, 104 English-dubbed episodes have been produced from the first 143 Japanese episodes of One Piece; and a variety of sources explain that 4Kids had dropped the license afterwards, such as Anime Newtype Magazine. The anime’s naming conventions were used in One Piece-related media in North America, such as the English version of the fighting game One Piece Grand Battle for the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Gamecube. The TV version of the FUNimation dub continues to use most of these names to date.

FUNimation English version

On April 12, 2007, FUNimation Entertainment announced it had acquired the license of One Piece and is currently producing the English version from episodes 144 onward, which premiered on Cartoon Network on September 29, 2007.

FUNimation will also distribute the series in unedited bilingual DVD box sets, which will retail for US$ 49.98 and contain 13 episodes each. The DVD box sets will also feature unedited video & English audio track. The unedited English language track will restore character and objects renamed in the dub to their original names. These changes were not made in the TV edit to allow continuity in the English broadcast of the TV series.

FUNimation announced that the DVDs will be officially released starting at episode 1 on May 27, 2008. FUNimation has also said that they will release Movie 8 on DVD on February 19, 2008 and in select theatres across America starting February 7 and ending on February 10. They also released an English Version of One Piece Unlimited Adventure (That includes all original playable characters and power ups as the Japanese version) that was released on January 22nd, 2008.

I have decided to add the One Piece Series to my main website! I think I will put the japanese ones with english subtitles for now, because they don’t edit out quite so much…

if it is requested enough, I will try to get videos from the english production too!

Heard about manga before, but not really sure what it is?

Maybe you have an idea of what it is, but don’t know much about it, and where it came from. Well, the purpose of this page is to give you a little bit better idea of what MANGA is, and why it interests me!

MANGA

Manga is the Japanese word for comics and print cartoons. A Manga Artist is one who makes the comics and cartoons. Manga Artists make all kinds of comics such as InuYasha, Ranma 1/2, Ayashi No Ceres, Tsubasa, and even more. All of the ones that I have mentioned are Animes too.

So, What is the difference between Manga and Anime?

Like I said earlier, Manga is a sort of comic that comes from Japan. It comes in small books and is run in certain magazines. Anime on the other hand, is animated (thus the name) and runs on television in Japan. Both of course get imported to other countries.

Well, there you have it… the Technical term… “Manga” in japan means any printed cartoon, and “Anime” refers to any animated film. But there is more to it than just that.

If you consider “modern manga,” some influences are obviously taken from western cartoons, yet they also take influence from Chinese art as well. this results in a unique style that you see today!

Another difference when compaing Manga to Comics is that while most comics and cartoons are geared towards a younger crowd, Anime and Manga Can be geared towards youth and adults. There are plenty of Adult-Oriented Anime and Manga series out there, whereas you would be hard-pressed to find one in cartoon format!

Have you ever noticed, that in Anime or Manga characters have Huge eyes? the reason for this is because Osamu Tezuka, one of the most famous creators of anime/manga saw that in movies like Bambi and Snow White the characters had large eyes that made showing characters emotions much easier. Tezuka’s works have set the standard for many generations of anime and manga artists.

Showing stress or a tense situation is done with what looks like a mathematical plus sign on the forehead. The sign is supposed to be a bulging vein… A rather gross thing unique to anime and manga is that big, wet, drippy snot bubbles coming out of a characters nose denote that the character is asleep. Finally, a large sweat bead on the characters forehead shows that they are nervous. It’s a very common occurrence for people to be nervous in Japan during conversation, because in Japan people are often too polite to say what they’re really thinking.

Well, there you go… a quick info session on what Manga is. I will probably post a more in-depth history of Manga eventually as well, I hope you enjoyed it!

Okay, so today after writing a blog about which anime I am currently watching, I decided to actually get my but into gear and work on my actual website! Basically what I am making is a site dedicated to being able to view anime and cartoons (the ones that I like, of course!) online without a charge. I mean, I have seen other sites like this that have a few here and there, but none that has everything I wanted… So what other option is there to do but make one myself! this way people can see videos like what you’d see on the tube etc, but here they will be all nice and organized and in order and whatnot! anyways, if you are interested, check it out and enjoy!!
